What Does an LSAT Tutor Do?

Contrary to popular belief, the LSAT does not test an innate intellectual ability. Rather, the LSAT assesses how someone has been trained to interpret information. At Foundations Test Prep, we teach you to think like the test makers.

There are thirteen types of LSAT questions, asking for a specific type of thinking. Some may be testing your ability to notice assumptions within arguments, some may be looking for an ability to make an inference, and some may be  asking you to break down the parts of an argument. As you become familiar with these question types and how to approach them, you will find yourself instantly recognizing what a question is asking from you. With this power, you’ll find yourself moving through the test faster and faster.

Taking practice tests early and often is an important part of preparing for the LSAT. But working with a dedicated guide who can shape your approach is the difference between familiarity and mastery.

Why Foundations Test Prep?

A unique approach to learning

Have you ever wondered why law schools care about the LSAT? What is the point of these questions?

At Foundations Test Prep, we believe that LSAT success should feel rewarding and impactful. LSAT mastery is built on a strong foundation of critical thinking and reasoning skills that you will use for the rest of your life.

In his experience as a tutor for larger test prep companies, Nirasean noticed that his students benefited most from extra time spent unpicking their thinking and the very basis of reasoning. Drawing on his background in philosophy and formal logic, Nirasean began adding a new dimension to his lesson plans which his students loved and appreciated.

Every argument is a structure. Nirasean can give you the tools to pry open these structures. When you understand how to recognize, make, and manipulate arguments, the LSAT becomes simple, manageable, and even enjoyable.

That’s why our personalized study plans go deeper. We ground every lesson in logic, inference, and argumentation, giving you the skills to master the LSAT and thrive in law school and beyond.

Nirasean Guarino - Lead Tutor

As your tutor, Nirasean brings intellectual rigor and zeal to every session. Nirasean achieved his own 99th-percentile LSAT score by connecting his background in philosophy with the structure of the test. His favorite subjects are formal logic, ethics, and philosophy of science.

While working as a tutor for a major LSAT prep corporation, Nirasean noticed that his students were missing questions that hinged on an understanding of formal logic. These students improved dramatically when they revisited the foundations of argumentation. This experience inspired him to create Foundations Test Prep, where he channels his insight and his enthusiasm for lifelong learning into helping you achieve your highest possible score.

FAQ

Why are foundation sessions more expensive per hour?

Before your first session, Nirasean prepares by carefully going over your practice test/s to determine what type of questions you miss a res what lessons would help you.

Where are you guys located?

We are located in Yolo county and see clients in person in the West Sacramento and Davis areas.

I am not in Sacramento. Can I book a session?

Yes, we meet virtually with clients all over the country!

Is LSAT tutoring worth it?

Yes, most 170+ scores are achieved with tutoring. Depending on your initial score you can expect to improve between 5 and 20 points with about 5 hours of tutoring.

I have a really high score. Is tutoring worth it?

If you want it to be higher.

I have a really low score. Is tutoring worth it?

Yes, you probably do not understand what the test is looking for and your score will change with tutoring.

Why should I hire you over a bigger name tutoring company?

When you buy sessions from a big name, the highest level of product you receive is one-on-one sessions with an individual tutor who probably has similar qualifications to Nirasean. With Foundations, you pay a little less and get a lot more: a holistic approach to logical thinking with a particularly dedicated an enthusiastic tutor. It’s basically a much better deal.

I’m convinced. How many sessions should I book?

You can start with the foundational session and then we can discuss how many follow-up sessions you would benefit from. Three is usually a really solid start.

How do I book a session?

You can schedule with acuity or just email us

The Toughest LSAT Question…

How would you answer this question?

Biologists have noted reproductive abnormalities in fish that are immediately downstream of paper mills. One possible cause is dioxin, which paper mills release daily and which can alter the concentration of hormones in fish. However, dioxin is unlikely to be the cause, since the fish recover normal hormone concentrations relatively quickly during occasional mill shutdowns and dioxin decomposes very slowly in the environment.

Which one of the following statements, if true, most seriously weakens the argument?

(A) Some of the studies that show that fish recover quickly during shutdowns were funded by paper manufacturers.

(B) The rate at which dioxin decomposes varies depending on the conditions to which it is exposed

(C) Normal river currents carry the dioxin present in the river far downstream in a few hours.

(D) Some of the fish did not recover rapidly from the physiological changes that were induced by the changes in hormone concentrations.

(E) The connection between hormone concentrations and reproductive abnormalities is not thoroughly understood.

If you’re anything like 80% of LSAT takers, your answer is not correct!

How should you go about answering a question like this on test day? And what on earth are they looking for? We’ve labeled it all out in this sample!
